Investigating Social Factors Affecting the Incidence of Domestic Violence Against Women in Urmia city

Abstract

Background and purpose: One of the most common forms of violence against women is domestic violence. The present study was designed and conducted with the aim of investigating the social factors affecting the incidence of domestic violence against women in Urmia city in 2022.

Research method: This research is designed in a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical way. The environment of the research is two health centers of Al-Mahdi and health center of Urmia city, which were randomly selected. In a period of three months, all women aged 15 to 60 who were eligible to participate in the research were examined with an easy and accessible sampling method and a volume of 640 people.

Findings: The findings show that women between the ages of 41 and 50 have experienced more violence. Also, higher education also made them report domestic violence. Domestic violence is more common among families with lower incomes. The relationship between patriarchal beliefs and traditional upbringing with violence against women has been shown to be significant and positive. Also, there has been a significant and direct relationship between spouses' income and violence against women.

Conclusion: According to the evidence, the economic status has a significant relationship with the occurrence of domestic violence against women in Urmia city. Patriarchal beliefs that are rooted in the culture and tradition of a society can be effective on the level of violence, and this requires culture building.
